Legacy

The wine that was born from a family, a land and a conviction.

In the Central Valley of Tarija, where the sun shines warmly on the hillsides and the air smells of rich earth, in this slice of heaven, the Trigo family found a place to put down roots. La Querencia was not just a property: it was a refuge, a promise, the beginning of something that didn’t yet have a name but already had a destiny.

Among those fertile soils, the first agricultural tasks began, without imagining that, decades later, a winery would rise there, taking the family name further than any of them had dreamed.

Over time, the altitude—almost 1,900 meters above sea level—became an ally. The first vines were planted: Cardinal, Italia, Syrah, Tannat. Initially, the intention was simple: to produce good grapes. But the land insisted on revealing something more. There was character, there was elegance, there was a story waiting to be told in wine.

And the one who knew how to listen to it was Rodrigo Trigo, the Barbacana

Rodrigo’s beard grew gray with sacrifice, acquiring the maturity and wisdom that the land and the vine demand, his back firmly planted by his family, with the noble spirit of a singing and smiling soul, and with the pure air of the valleys where dreams rest in his vineyards and winery. The countryside was his school, the harvest his ritual, and artisanal winemaking his way of honoring life.

2013

The first attempt

Around 2013 he filled just 300 bottles of a wine he named San Bernardo de la Frontera, without knowing that this first attempt would ignite the path of a brand that would soon have its own soul.

2015

The impetus and the beginning of Barbacana

Recognition came quickly. In 2015, their 2014 Syrah was chosen as the best varietal of the harvest. And that small victory felt like a blessing from fate: a sign that it was time to build something bigger.

Thus, Bodega Barbacana was formally born, with one non-negotiable premise: to produce high-altitude wines, in small batches, with an undiluted identity. Wines that tell the truth of their land.

2016

The first favorite is born

In 2016 came a milestone that would mark history: the first Tannat Reserva, a wine that not only won over palates but also became a symbol of the house. Elegant, complex, powerful… a statement of intent.

2016 - 2021

Growing

Then came new wine lines, such as Cofradía, designed for those seeking young, fresh, and accessible wines. And Barbacana's Singani was also born, which would eventually win awards both domestically and internationally.

2022

We open Our House to wine tourism

The winery opened its doors to the public, and the dirt roads began to fill with visitors seeking the complete experience: walking among vineyards, understanding the process, tasting wines that taste of family, of altitude, of Tarija..

2022 - 2025

Consolidation

The awards kept coming. Grand Gold, Gold, and Silver medals. And then, the most anticipated: two Gold medals at Catad’Or, the most prestigious wine competition in Latin America. Later, further accolades followed in Chile and Brazil, which elevated Barbacana's reputation even higher.

We also consolidated our expansion into the national market, reaching the country's main cities: La Paz, Cochabamba, Santa Cruz, and Sucre.

Nov 2025

The dream of reaching the world

Barbacana wines crossed oceans to reach Japan. Our wines embarked on a historic journey that marked the beginning of the winery's internationalization.

Barbacana Present Days

Today, Barbacana is one of Tarija’s leading boutique wineries. A young, modern, and professional brand, built with family hands, a clear vision, and a deep respect for the land that gave it birth.

Because here, every bottle tells a story, with a dream, a family, and a valley that made it possible; a legacy of land, vines, and family love.
